The Opportunity

Makueni's Avocado Industry

Makueni County is steadily emerging as an important avocado-growing region, with the crop presenting significant opportunities for improved farmer incomes, value addition, employment and market development.

According to the Government of Makueni County, avocado production in the county increased from approximately 2,100 metric tonnes in 2021 to 2,394 metric tonnes in 2023.

At the national level, Kenya's avocado industry is experiencing significant expansion. According to the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) Yearbook of Statistics 2025, national avocado production increased by 34%, from 632,953 metric tonnes in 2023 to 848,122 metric tonnes in 2024.

This growth presents an important opportunity for Makueni farmers and businesses to participate more competitively in Kenya's expanding avocado economy.

Factors Driving the Avocado Opportunity

01 Expanding Production

Kenya's avocado production increased by 34% between 2023 and 2024, reaching 848,122 metric tonnes. The expansion of production into non-traditional growing areas demonstrates the growing potential of counties such as Makueni.

02 Growing Farmer Investment

The County Government of Makueni continues to support avocado farmers through interventions including clean planting materials, certified nurseries, grafting services, spraying services and farmer capacity building.

03 Quality is Becoming More Important

As Kenya strengthens its position in international markets, quality, maturity, food safety and proper post-harvest handling are becoming increasingly important. Maintaining quality from orchard to export is critical to protecting Kenya's market reputation.

04 Expanding International Market Access

Kenya continues to pursue new markets for its avocado produce. A major milestone was the opening of the Indian market to Kenyan avocados in 2023 following bilateral negotiations between Kenya and India.

05 Value Addition

Growing production must be matched by stronger market systems. Opportunities in processing, packaging, cold-chain management, aggregation and structured marketing can help farmers and businesses capture more value.

06 Stronger Farmer-to-Market Linkages

Makueni County's partnership with TradeMark Africa to establish an Export Supply Hub is designed to strengthen horticultural market access while supporting aggregation, cold storage, processing and packaging.

2026 Summit Theme

Growing Value, Expanding Markets, Empowering Farmers

The Next Phase of Makueni's Avocado Industry

The future of Makueni's avocado industry is not simply about producing more fruit. It is about creating more value from every kilogram produced, reaching better markets and ensuring farmers receive a greater share of the value generated along the supply chain.

The Makueni Avocado Summit 2026 comes at a critical time as the county and the country seek to strengthen the competitiveness of the avocado value chain.

The Summit will bring together farmers, producer organisations, processors, exporters, buyers, financiers, government agencies, researchers, certifiers, logistics providers, technology companies and development partners to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the next phase of the industry.

The focus will move beyond production to the complete avocado ecosystem — from orchard establishment and productivity to aggregation, quality, processing, logistics, market access, export readiness and farmer incomes.
